Isn’t it odd, that the man who will likely usher in the most astronomic exploration in our time, is also, by any objective measure, an unhinged narcissist? And yet, that is the nature of the economic system we have wrought.
Admittedly, I am a capitalist. I have prospered through the unequal wealth allotment that is our economic system, and yet, I find it wanting.
At the core, I find capitalism to be a harnessing of humanity’s dangerous impulses for the sake of good, or at least, pseudo good. We harness greed for innovation. Madness, for creativity. Wanton desire, for efficiency. The nature of the system, seems to me: “the free market shall prevail.” That fundamental “survival of the fittest” style mechanic is both the intrinsic genius and the horror of capitalism.
I suppose, at the end of the day, I do ultimately feel uncertain. Capitalism may well be the unintuitive vault that humanity can use for its success. However, it too may be, the unexpected demise of humanity in the long run. It’s hard to say. Humans do undeniably have dark impulses, and thus, harnessing them, is an awfully appealing opportunity. However, there is a non-zero risk in dancing with the devil. I suppose time will tell which it is.
